Killjoy at Christmas
First of all, if there are any innocent kiddies reading this please look away now...
It's lovely when children still believe in Santa in these cynical times. However, it only takes on bishop in British TV to talk about "adults buying children presents" to spoil it all.
How do you explain round that one? Suggestions please!

I cannot understand the desire of those who want to initiate their children into a faith by being deceitful from the very outset.
I am sure this leads to many having serious concerns about the christian faith in later life and/or brings them up on a foundation of untruthfulness.
The bishop's job is to explain Christianity, not the commercial merry-go-round, with all its "sales techniques", which surrounds it.
I don't think finding out that Santa doesnt exist has any impact on how children view religion. We have folklore in our culture, just as many other cultures do and I don't think this impinges on our fundamental religious values.
But nevertheless the killjoys will follow you around, to promote their own agenda. The fact is that Santa has nothing to do with Christianity...Santa Claus has no truck with "initiation into faith" (unless Santa is God in some new religion)...
Glad this blog is still open to anonymous posting, unlike those who don't enjoy alternative points of view.
I'll always keep my anonymous posting option open as long as you all play nice, ya hear!

OK, but how about discovering that their parents lied to them and wondering what else they convinced them about when they were small and naive.
Yes, finding out that there was no Tooth Fairy wrecked my relationship with my parents...
First, apologies for my tone in my previous comment. It looks like you're right about the January doldrums.
Even so, the bishop or in general the clergy (as I didn't hear this bishop's words) have a mission which at Christmas is to remind people about the message of Christmas. He was only doing his job. I am sure his intent wasn't joy-killing.
Anyway, Happy Valentine's Day. It's almost Feb and I'm still on about Chrimble. I'll shut up now.
