SHOCK! HORROR! Western expats start doing their own housework!

Times are getting tough in the Emirates for the western 'middle classes'. The rising cost of fuel has meant some of them have had to sell their gas guzzling SUVs and exchange them for easy to park, economical cars like the ones you see on the streets of Europe (article is on page 4)

BUT what's this? In a further attempt to economise they're sacking their maids and doing the housework themselves! No, this hasn't made the headlines of the Guff News yet, but being plugged into the Al Ain grapevine I can tell you this is beginning to happen... Posted by Picasa

Since sacking his maid,
Edwin has to do his own
ironing. He says the 900 AED
monthly saving means he can
buy more beer in the Horse &
Jockey pub.

Is this the beginning of the death of the Jumeirah Jane image, as she realises she can no longer afford the daily beauty salon sessions, coffee mornings at the Lime Tree, and thrice weekly trips to The One Furniture Store ("oh that settee looks marvelous!") ?

Could be. We all know that Dubai is no longer considered a 'hardship posting' and Dubai is trading on its image these days not the high tax free salaries of old times. So, I guess that we may see less of the JJs as they start to go out to work to keep gas in the car.

Why does anyone care what expats spend their money on???

Please explain this fascination...it seems to be the primary topic on almost every UAE blog I see.

I just don't get it. Are people jealous of their easy life? It seems to me that UAE would be glad that people are spending money...yet I see so much hatred for these "Janes" and how they spend their days and their money...

What's the real issue?

Jealousy I think. There are some of us out here that are not living 'the lifestyle' and are a little pissed off about it.
